Greetings readers! For this post, I am going to tell you about a resource that my family has used for our evening Devotions.
We first discovered this Bible when The Boy was about 2 years old. Hubby’s sister and her family had been using it and had high praise for it, so we decided that we wanted to give it a try as well. It’s called The Jesus Storybook Bible.
We probably purchased it and started reading it slightly too early for The Boy’s age, but we still love it and have since used it a few times for Family Devotions. For our Family Devotions time, we like to change up what we do so it doesn’t become the same thing over and over again.
Typically what we do is choose a Bible or devotional book to work through. Once we have gone through the entire book, we choose a new one to go through. So when The Boy was about 2 1/2, we read through The Jesus Storybook Bible. When we finished that, we switched to a different children’s Bible that included questions for each story. After that, we switch to still another children’s Bible, then back to the Jesus Storybook Bible, and so on.
We look at this method as the equivalent of reading different versions of the Bible. As adults, there are numerous versions of the Bible available to us. Some translations are closer to the original texts than others, and so it’s often a good idea to read a variety of versions when studying God’s Word so as to understand the meaning more fully.
On our second and third times through each Bible, we find that The Boy is able to grasp more of what is being read. Occasionally, he even reads part of the night’s reading also.
Out of all the Bibles we have used during Family Devotions, The Jesus Storybook Bible is one of our favorites. This Bible tells the stories in ways that children can understand (though the stories tend to be a few pages each, so for younger children, it may be a good idea to only read one page at a time), and the thing we have found so different and what we like so much about this particular Bible is that every story (from both the Old Testament and the New Testament) is told in the context of Jesus.
For anyone who has read/reads the Bible, you may have noticed that the main point of the Bible (even in the Old Testament) is to point the way toward Jesus. Yes, the Bible includes accounts of historical events, shows us the character of God, and has stories that teach us how to obey God’s commands, but the most important aspect of God’s Word is that Jesus is the Savior of the world. Therefore, every story — no matter how unrelated it may seem — points to Jesus as the Savior.
For Hubby and me, our goal is to share this vital information with our children when we read the Bible together as a family. The Jesus Storybook Bible makes this task easier because each story ends with a simple connection to Jesus.
As I mentioned earlier, we love using this Bible during our devotion time, and we will return to it time and time again as we continue teaching our children about Him.
Thank you for taking the time to read this post. I hope you have found it helpful!
